Thoughts on a Breezy Shore

Gravel sits comfortably around the rose-rock steps, leading us home if needed. Here and there we could see the glistening patio lights from the cottages set well back from the dirt road, thousands of feet across the water. Drifting on top of the current, the boat houses rock softly to the beat of the waves. Redbuds stand tall, wrapping around the bank, tucking their branches in for a sweet rest as we join the sounds of the crickets tattling to one another in the untouchable twilight. Moist air sticks to the vanilla-scented sun screen as an unusual warmth flies with the nighttime breeze taking a turn within our hair. A small cloud of dust pushes into the light of the golden ancestor, glimmering its last light on the labyrinths of the eight-legged creatures, rushing above the lush grass. Honey-barbeque sauce and burning charcoal swirl through our noses, tickling the child within.
Colors overpower the sky one by one, blue red and white, shooting above our faces. Breaks between the leafs of the fifty foot Elm trees lets the moon shine like a sparkling blue jewel along the waterline.  Flashes of glowing fire shine around us, flickering quickly one by one, two-stepping through the thick humidity. Giggling together we move the stars to the motion of our finger tips. She tilts her head slightly toward mine. “My truths and promises turn in circles, bouncing off the walls of faith, but this summer night holds my hand as I grow alongside of you.”  I hold my words back and watch the shine of her florescent brown eyes disappear with the still silence of our summer night.
